This exclusive print marks the first-ever collaboration between the WVU Alumni Association, Base Camp Printing Company, and the WVU College of Creative Arts. Specifically designed for alumni of West Virginia University by fellow Mountaineers, this one of a kind print utilizes the historic GramLee Collection of commercial wood engravings that is owned and protected by the College of Creative Arts.
Emily and Betsy Sokolosky each graduated from West Virginia University before founding Base Camp Printing Company in Charleston, West Virginia. There, they work each day to create posters, invitations, stationary and more while maintaining the integrity of the cast-iron printing press process. As a student at WVU, Emily was introduced to the GramLee Collection which is now used as a teaching tool under the management of the School of Art and Design. Overseen by Associate Professor Joe Galbreath in the graphic design area, students, researchers, and guest printers have been provided access to the collection, thus keeping the imagery and content alive in the 21st century.
The GramLee Collection consists of printing materials from S. George & Company, located in Wellsburg, West Virginia, which were donated to West Virginia University in the mid-1990s. S. George & Company was founded around the middle of the 19th century. At one time a mop factory, it began using trimmings from mops and scrap hemp to manufacture a rough paper suitable for making bags. The company eventually converted entirely to making and printing bags related to flour, corn meal and animal feeds, and by the turn of the 20th century was one of the top five bag printers in the U.S., serving clients from as far away as Massachusetts and Minnesota.
By purchasing this limited-edition print you’re helping to support WVU alumni owned and operated Basecamp Printing Company and the nonprofit WVU Alumni Association.
